Homeworld

Homeworld.
Homeworld is a real-time strategy video game developed by Relic Entertainment and published by Sierra Studios (co-founder pictured) in 1999 for Microsoft Windows. The science fiction game follows exiles on a spacecraft-constructing mothership who aim to reclaim their ancient homeworld, encountering pirates, mercenaries, traders, and rebels along the way. The player's fleet carries over between levels, and can travel in a fully three-dimensional space. Alex Garden of Relic served as the game's director, and Luke Moloney was lead programmer. Metacritic lists Homeworld as the highest rated computer game of 1999 and the third-highest on any platform for the year, although critical opinions were divided on its plot and high difficulty. The game sold over 500,000 copies in its first six months, and received several awards and nominations for best strategy game of the year and best game of the year. Gearbox Software purchased the game rights in 2013 and released a remastered collection in 2015.

Masked booby

Masked booby.
The masked booby (Sula dactylatra) is a large seabird of the booby and gannet family, Sulidae. First described by the French naturalist René Lesson in 1831, the species is one of six in the genus Sula. It has a long pointed yellowish bill, long neck, aerodynamic body, long slender wings and pointed tail. The adult is bright white with black wings, a black tail and a dark face mask; at 75 to 85 cm (30 to 33 in) long, it is the largest species of booby. The sexes have similar plumage. The species is not threatened; it ranges across tropical oceans, except in the eastern Atlantic and eastern Pacific. Nesting takes place in colonies, generally on islands and atolls far from the mainland and close to the deep water required for foraging. Potential and mated pairs engage in courtship and greeting displays. The female lays two chalky white eggs in a shallow depression on flat ground away from vegetation. These birds are spectacular high-speed plunge divers, preying mainly on flying fish.

C. O. Brocato

C. O. Brocato.
C. O. Brocato (1929–2015) was an American scout, coach and football player best known for his work with the Houston Oilers (later the Tennessee Titans), for which he was a scout from 1974 to 1976, and again from 1981 until his death. A native of Shreveport, Louisiana, Brocato attended St. John's High School and played college football for Baylor. Drafted in 1953 by the Chicago Cardinals, he left during training camp to pursue a coaching career. He spent eleven years as head coach at his high school alma mater. He was defensive coordinator for Northern Arizona from 1969 to 1970, and for Texas–Arlington from 1971 to 1973. He then joined the Oilers as a scout and became regarded as one of the greatest in history in that role. Brocato helped his team draft several players who went on to the Pro Football Hall of Fame. He also invented the three-cone drill, one of the main events at the NFL Scouting Combine. He was a semifinalist for induction to the Hall of Fame for the classes of 2023 and 2024.

Tinder Fire

Tinder Fire.
The Tinder Fire was a wildfire that burned 16,309 acres (66.00 km2) of the Coconino National Forest in the U.S. state of Arizona during April and May 2018. The 2017 Arizona wildfires had been followed by drought, including a historically dry winter season. The Tinder Fire was detected from a lookout tower of the U.S. Forest Service on April 27, and firefighters began working to contain its spread within the day. Stoked by strong winds, low humidity, and high temperatures, the fire grew rapidly over late April, prompting the closure of Arizona State Route 87 and evacuation orders for 1,000 houses in Coconino County. These orders remained until May 4. Almost 700 firefighters were involved in combating the fire, which was fully contained on May 24. It destroyed 96 buildings, including 33 homes, and cost $7,500,000 to contain and suppress. An investigation determined that the Tinder Fire was caused by an illegal campfire.

Airport Central railway station

Airport Central railway station.
Airport Central railway station is an underground Transperth commuter rail station at terminals one and two of Perth Airport in Western Australia. The station is located on the Airport line and is one of three stations that were built as part of the Forrestfield–Airport Link project, which consists of 8 kilometres (5 mi) of twin bored tunnels and three stations. Construction began in May 2017 following preparatory work. By January 2018, excavation was complete, and in May 2018 the two tunnel boring machines reached the station after tunnelling from High Wycombe. The machines left the station tunnelling north-west in July, and construction of the rest of the station started. A 280-metre (920 ft) elevated walkway was built linking the station to the airport's terminal one. Originally planned to open in 2020, the line and station officially opened on 9 October 2022. The journey to Perth station takes eighteen minutes.

Hurricane Walaka

Hurricane Walaka.
Hurricane Walaka was the nineteenth named storm and second Category 5 hurricane of the 2018 Pacific hurricane season. As a tropical cyclone, it originated from an area of low pressure that formed around 1,600 mi (2,600 km) south-southeast of Hawaii on September 24, and became a tropical storm on September 29. The system tracked westward and peaked with winds of 160 mph (260 km/h) and a pressure of 921 mbar (27.20 inHg) on October 2, before accelerating northeastward and dissipating on October 7. The storm passed close to Johnston Atoll, where four scientists were evacuated from before the storm hit. East Island in the French Frigate Shoals suffered a direct hit and was destroyed. The storm damaged the nesting grounds for multiple endangered species, and coral reefs in the region suffered considerable damage, displacing the local fish population. Several dozen people were rescued off the southern shore of Oahu as the storm brought high surf to the main Hawaiian Islands.

Banksia dentata

Banksia dentata.
Banksia dentata is a species of tree in the genus Banksia. It occurs in northern Australia, southern New Guinea and the Aru Islands. Growing as a gnarled tree up to 7 m (23 ft) high, it has leaves up to 22 cm (8.7 in) long with toothed margins. The cylindrical yellow flower spikes, up to 13 cm (5 in) high, appear between November and May, attracting honeyeaters, sunbirds, sugar gliders and insects. Flowers fall off the spikes, which swell and develop follicles containing up to two seeds each. Collected by Sir Joseph Banks in 1770, B. dentata is one of the four Banksia species published in 1782 as part of Carl Linnaeus the Younger's original description of Banksia. It is classified in Salicinae, a series, or group of species, from Australia's eastern states. Genetic studies show it to be an early offshoot within the group. It is found in savanna, associated with Pandanus and Melaleuca. After bushfires it regrows from its woody base, known as a lignotuber.

Xá Lợi Pagoda raids

Xá Lợi Pagoda raids.
The Xá Lợi Pagoda raids were attacks on various Buddhist pagodas in South Vietnam in 1963, executed by the Army of the Republic of Vietnam Special Forces and combat police, who both took their orders from Ngô Đình Nhu, brother of President Ngô Đình Diệm. South Vietnam's Buddhist majority were protesting religious bias and discrimination, and temples in major cities, notably Xá Lợi Pagoda (pictured) in Saigon, became focal points for protesters. On 21 August, Nhu's men attacked, looted and vandalised the pagodas. In Huế, street battles erupted between government forces and rioting civilians. Over 1,400 Buddhists were arrested, and estimates of the number dead or missing ranged up to the hundreds. The Ngô family claimed that the army had carried out the raids; this was later debunked, prompting the United States to turn against the regime, leading to Diệm's overthrow. In response to the raids, several public servants resigned, and university and high school students boycotted classes and staged demonstrations.

Hungarian nobility

Hungarian nobility.
The Hungarian nobility were initially a diverse body of people, but from the late 12th century only high-ranking royal officials were regarded as noble. Most claimed ancestry from chieftains of the period preceding the establishment of the kingdom around the year 1000, or were descended from western European knights who settled in Hungary. Only those who owned lands free of obligations were regarded as true noblemen. Other groups, known as conditional nobles, also existed. Under customary law, only males inherited noble estates. The poorest nobles lost their tax exemption from the mid–16th century. The ennoblement of whole groups was not unusual in the 17th century. A group of 10,000 hajdúk received nobility in 1605. After the Diet was divided into two chambers in 1608, noblemen with a hereditary title had a seat in the upper house. Reformist noblemen demanded the abolition of noble privileges from the 1790s. Noble titles were only abolished in 1947, after Hungary was proclaimed a republic.

Hurricane Hector (2018)

Hurricane Hector (2018).
Hurricane Hector was a tropical cyclone that became the eighth named storm, fourth hurricane, and third major hurricane of the 2018 Pacific hurricane season. Originating north of South America on July 22, it entered the Pacific around July 25. It became a tropical depression on July 31 and a tropical storm about 12 hours later. It rapidly intensified to its initial peak as a Category 2 hurricane. It peaked as a Category 4 hurricane on August 6, with winds of 155 mph (250 km/h) and a pressure of 936 mbar (27.64 inHg). It passed south of Hawaii's Big Island on August 8, causing high surf and necessitating the rescue of several dozen people on Oahu. It spent 186 hours at major hurricane intensity, the longest on record in the Eastern Pacific basin. It fell below that intensity on August 11. Deteriorating as it moved westward, it weakened to a tropical storm by August 13, a tropical depression by August 15, and dissipated the next day.
